Apple has announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion apps from the App Store, with more than 20 billion downloads coming in 2012 alone. December saw consumers download over 2 billion apps, a month record for the App Store.
The App Store offers more than 775,000 apps, and there are more than 500 million active accounts. The success of the iPhone, aided by the popularity of the iPad with the new iPad Mini and the iPod Touch has seen the number of apps download grow phenomenally, since the App Store opened in 2008.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
Some of the more popular recent apps on the App Store include Temple Run, which was downloaded more than 75 million times alone, as well as DragonVale, Clash of the Clans, Uber, Flipboard, HotelTonight and Air BnB.
The App Store is now available in more than 155 countries, and from the more than 775,000 apps available, more than 300,000 are native apps for the iPad. Customers can download apps from a range of categories, including the ever popular games, plus apps for News, Sports, Health and Travel, along with a range of newpapers and magazines available via the Apple Newsstand app.
