Samsung predicted it will ship 510 million phone handsets in 2013.
We should stress that shipments do not equal sales, however.
From this overall figure the company believes a majority of 390 million will be smartphones and the bigger chunk of these will be Android-based, Galaxy-branded hardware, reports Korea Times.
However, it does expect to move more Windows Phone 8 handsets compared with previous shipment figures for Windows Phone 7 devices.
Clearly Samsung is hoping for this to result in big sales from its forthcoming Galaxy S4 flagship Android smartphone.
The Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2 have all been popular devices in 2012 and the Galaxy S4 appears poised to pick up where these models left off.
Earlier leaks have emphasised that the Galaxy S4 will have a 5-inch 440ppi HD display, larger than the Galaxy S3’s 4.8-inch screen but slightly smaller than the Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inches or the Note 2’s 5.5-inches and with a higher resolution.
However, according to a new report the Galaxy S4 will be the first Galaxy S model (and the first non-Note branded model) to boast an S-Pen stylus. Rumours strongly suggest the Galaxy S3 will run on next-generation ARM Cortex-A15 processor architecture.
While Samsung’s predictions may be ambitious, there’s good reason for it. The company has enjoyed a record sales year and has even surpassed Apple’s iPhone 5. It has also established itself as a dominant force in the Android space.
Before Christmas 2012 the Galaxy S3 was the best-selling smartphone in the UK and across the world has sold over 30 million units so far.
